Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The armed faction breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in the past few months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the conflict.
