Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
