The Gunners' Boss Admits Long-Term Role Is Tied to Lifting Major Honors.
On the eve of his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.
Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge
Arteta took over on the 20th of December in 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory not long after. But, that first major trophy is still his only significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.
“Absolutely,” he stated in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the next few months as well to warrant that continuation.”
He will mark the landmark with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.
Present Challenges
Given that chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured over 100 injuries since the start of last season.
He currently has 18 months remaining on the deal he signed in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required promptly.
The Manager's Mandate
Arteta elaborated, emphasizing the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you communicate, how you step into the dressing room, the message you convey.”
He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the club's ownership, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as the key factor. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, hunger for knowledge and dedicate themselves to the team.”

The squad heads into the Everton match coping with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a hamstring injury that is expected to sideline him for the coming weeks.
Evolved Priorities
Even with the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he began his reign.
Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as proof they are close. “Examine the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the caliber we've reached.”
In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
