Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
